Click-through rate (CTR) in SEO is the percentage of users who click on a search result after seeing it in the SERP, calculated as clicks divided by impressions multiplied by 100. A page appearing 1,000 times in search results and receiving 50 clicks has a CTR of 5%. CTR is reported at both the query level and the URL level in Google Search Console.
CTR is influenced by ranking position, title tag quality, meta description appeal, the presence of rich results or SERP features, and whether the query triggers zero-click features that resolve the intent before a user clicks. Improving CTR without changing rankings is possible by optimizing title tags and meta descriptions to be more compelling and relevant.
Why it matters for SEO
CTR directly translates search visibility into actual traffic. A page ranking in position three with a highly optimized title and rich snippet can outperform a position-one result with a generic snippet. Monitoring and improving CTR is one of the highest-leverage optimization opportunities available, since it requires no link building and can produce immediate traffic gains.
