Your Snippet is Your Ad in Google

Even if you rank #1, a truncated title or weak description can dramatically lower your click-through rate. Your SERP snippet is the only thing users see before deciding whether to click.

CTR is a Ranking Signal

Google uses click-through rate as a quality signal. A compelling, well-truncated snippet improves both clicks and rankings.

Desktop vs Mobile Differ

Desktop shows ~160 description characters; mobile shows only ~120. Optimize for both to avoid awkward truncation.

Pixels Beat Characters

Google truncates by pixel width, not character count. "WWW" takes 3× more space than "iii". Pixel width gives you the real picture.

What People Are Saying

From bloggers to enterprise SEO teams.

I had no idea "WW" characters took up twice as much space as "li". The pixel width check saved several titles from being truncated.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should a title tag be?

Google typically displays up to 600px of pixel width for title tags, which corresponds to roughly 50–60 characters. Titles longer than 60 characters are often truncated with "…". For best results, keep titles between 50 and 60 characters.

How long should a meta description be?

Google shows approximately 160 characters on desktop and 120 characters on mobile before truncating. Keep your description between 140–160 characters for desktop, and front-load the most important information.

Why does Google sometimes show a different description than mine?

Google may rewrite or replace your meta description with content from the page if it believes the page content better answers the searcher's query. This is normal. A well-written description that matches your content is less likely to be overridden.

What is pixel width and why does it matter?

Google measures title tag length in pixels, not characters. Different characters have different widths (e.g., "W" is wider than "i"). A 60-character title with many wide characters may be truncated while a 65-character title with narrow characters fits fine. The pixel width estimate gives you a more accurate view.

What is the Rich Date toggle?

Google sometimes adds a date prefix to search snippets (e.g., "Apr 12, 2026 —") for content with clear publication dates. The rich date toggle simulates this so you can see how your description looks with a date prepended, helping you account for the extra characters.
