Relevance Factor

Relevance is one of three primary factors in Google's local ranking algorithm. It measures how well a local business listing matches the intent and content of a user's search query. Relevance signals are drawn from the Google Business Profile (business name, category, services, description, and attributes), the business's website content, and the consistency between all of these data sources.

Optimizing for relevance involves selecting the most specific and accurate GBP categories, fully completing all GBP fields including services and products, and ensuring the business's website has clear, keyword-rich content aligned with the business type and service offerings. Relevance determines whether a listing is even a candidate for local pack inclusion for a given query.

Why it matters for SEO

Relevance is the gating factor for local pack eligibility. A business that has not clearly communicated what it does — through categories, GBP content, and website signals — will not appear for its most important queries regardless of its proximity or review count. Maximizing relevance signals is the highest-control local SEO lever available to most businesses.
