Above the Fold
Above the fold refers to the portion of a web page that is visible without scrolling, immediately after the page loads. The term originates from print newspapers where the most important content appeared on the top half of the front page. In web design and SEO, content placed above the fold receives the most user attention and engagement.
Google's Page Layout algorithm penalizes pages where the above-the-fold area is overwhelmed by ads or non-content elements that push the main content down. From a UX and SEO standpoint, key messaging, primary keywords, and clear navigation should be visible in the viewport on first load — especially on mobile devices where the fold is much higher.
Why it matters for SEO
Content and value proposition visibility above the fold directly affects user engagement signals like bounce rate and dwell time, which are indirect ranking factors. Excessive advertising or empty space above the fold can also trigger algorithmic penalties from Google's Page Layout algorithm.
