Entity (SEO)

In SEO, an entity is a uniquely identifiable thing — a person, place, organization, product, or concept — that search engines can recognize and distinguish from similar things using attributes and relationships. Google's Knowledge Graph is built on entities, and the search engine increasingly understands the web through the lens of entities rather than just keywords.

Entity SEO focuses on clearly establishing what an entity is, its attributes, and its relationships to other entities through structured data, consistent NAP (Name, Address, Phone), authoritative mentions across the web, and alignment with knowledge base entries like Wikipedia and Wikidata. Strong entity recognition helps search engines understand a site's subject matter and authority with confidence.

Why it matters for SEO

Google has shifted from matching keywords to understanding entities and their relationships. Sites and content creators that establish clear entity signals — for themselves, their brand, and the topics they cover — benefit from stronger topical authority signals, better Knowledge Panel presence, and increased likelihood of citation in AI search responses.
