Search Generative Experience (SGE)
Search Generative Experience (SGE) was Google's experimental AI-powered search feature, introduced in 2023, that displayed AI-generated answer summaries at the top of search results above traditional organic listings. It was subsequently rolled out more broadly as "AI Overviews" in Google's standard search interface in 2024.
SGE/AI Overviews generate responses by synthesizing information from multiple web sources retrieved via a RAG-like process, sometimes citing sources inline. The feature fundamentally changes the SERP layout by inserting a large AI-generated block above organic results, reducing their visibility and driving the zero-click search problem for informational queries.
Why it matters for SEO
SGE/AI Overviews mark a structural change to the Google SERP that directly reduces click-through rates for informational queries that now receive an AI-generated answer. Understanding how these summaries are generated and which sources they cite is essential for SEO strategies aimed at maintaining organic visibility in the AI search era.
